The Spirit of Christmas

The Spirit of Christmas is the name of two short films by Trey Parker and Matt Stone , who later created the television series South Park based on them .

Jesus vs. Frosty

In 1992, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who were still students at the University of Colorado at the time, created the first part of The Spirit of Christmas called Jesus Vs. Frosty . All they had to do with the film was paper, glue and a very old 8mm camera. The short film premiered in December 1992 at the Student Film Screening .

The film shows how the children build a snowman. When one of the children tries to put a hat on the snowman, they are warned against it. The other child still puts his hat on and the snowman comes to life and first kills the character Cartman, who was then called Kenny. Thereupon one of the children yells the saying “Oh my god, Frosty killed Kenny” (Eng. “Oh my god, Frosty killed Kenny”), which later in the modified form “Oh my god, they killed Kenny” (Eng. “ Oh my god, they killed Kenny ”) became the running gag of the South Park series .

In their panic, the children flee, meet Santa Claus and tell him what happened. Just as they are done, it turns out that Santa Claus is actually Frosty in disguise, whereupon he kills the character known as Kenny in the South Park series. On the run again, they meet Jesus, who takes up the challenge and defeats Frosty.

Jesus vs. Santa

In 1995, Trey Parker and Matt Stone received $ 2,000 from a senior FOX broadcaster to produce a Jesus Vs.- style video. Producing Frosty to send as a Christmas card. This second film contained improved versions of the later South Park characters Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman, as well as an early version of Wendy Testaburger.

The total cost of the film was $ 750. The making of this film was parodied in the South Park episode ... and nobody laughs on Christmas night when the four main characters have to make a Christmas cartoon.

The film is about a dispute between Jesus and Santa Claus over the question of what is more important at Christmas - the birth of Jesus or gifts - then the two fight. Brian Boitano appears just at the right moment and explains to the two that Jesus needs Santa Claus to remember his birth and that Santa Claus needs Jesus, because without him there would be no Christmas.
