The Wailin 'Jennys

The Wailin 'Jennys is a folk trio from Winnipeg / Manitoba and New York and has existed since 2002 . It includes Ruth Moody ( soprano ), Nicky Mehta ( mezzo-soprano ) and Heather Masse ( alto ).

The group was founded by Moody, Mehta and Cara Luft . She left Luft in 2004 and was replaced by Annabelle Chvostek. She was followed by Heather Masse in 2007. During their tours and for their CD recordings, the Wailin 'Jennys bring in other musicians. The name (wailin '= whining, complaining) is a self-deprecating, humorous allusion to the country singer Waylon Jennings .

Melody and polyphony characterize the music of the Wailin 'Jennys. It combines folk, country and jazz . Almost all pieces are original compositions and newly arranged folk songs . The voices are mainly supported by acoustic instruments. On their album Fifteen (for the 15th anniversary of the band) they recorded eight cover versions of well-known songs in addition to a traditional one .

In 2005 the group won the Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year - Group for their album 40 Days .
