The Weathermen is an American hip hop group from New York City . It consists of the rappers Aesop Rock , Yak Ballz, Cage , El-P , Breeze Brewin and Tame1. Past members were Copywrite, Camu Tao, Vast Aire, Jakki da Motamouth and Masai Bey.

The name The Weathermen (English for Die Wetterfrösche ) is based on the left underground organization Weathermen , which were involved in attacks on government buildings in the USA in the 1960s and 1970s.

history

The group formed in New York City in the late 1990s as a loose association of like-minded musicians. The group's first official release, the song Same as it Never Was , appeared on the Definitive Jux label sampler Definitive Jux Presents II in 2001 . Another two songs appeared in 2003 on the Eastern Conference All-Stars III sampler on the Eastern Conference Records label. In the same year they released a mixtape called The Conspiracy on the same label.

In 2004 there was a dispute between Cage on the one hand and Eastern Conference Records, Copywrite, Jakki da Motamouth and Masai Bey on the other, who then left the group and devoted themselves to their solo projects. From then on, The Weathermen only published via Definitive Jux. After this dispute, Aesop Rock , who was previously under contract with Definitive Jux, was accepted as a new member.

Time and again, the release of the album The New Left was announced in press releases and songs by the individual members , but this never happened. Because after the death of Camu Tao in May 2008 it became quiet around the group and member Cage said there would be no new Weathermen album.

In 2008 the mixtape Vampires appeared on several blogs and websites . Whether this is an official release is questionable, as contradicting statements were made by the individual members about the status of the tape.
