The Westport News , also known as The News forshort, is a small, daily, independent, regional newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is in the northwestern part of the South Island , along the west coast around the city of Westport .

history

The Westport News was founded as an evening paper in 1871 or 1873 by Messrs. Captain Wright , Job L. Munson and the Irish and later New Zealand politician Eugene Joseph O'Connor . O'Connor briefly owned the Westport Times , which merged with the Westport Evening Star to form the Buller Times in 1937 and was in direct competition with Westport News until it was discontinued in 1941 . The Westport News was initially published three times a week. In April 1889 the newspaper was sold to a Mr. Reid , who changed the paper to a daily publication and published it in the morning. After his death in 1897, the time changed hands twice in quick succession, and finally on April 4, 1898, it was sold to Walter Atkin, an Australian newspaper maker.

On July 2, 1945, Westport News Limited was founded, the present owner of the newspaper. Colin Joseph Warren became the owner of the company on February 16, 1986 . He has been the editor of Westport News since that time . Warren was awarded the MNZM Member New Zealand Order of Merit on December 31, 1999 for service to the community .

The newspaper today
