The Theban Mapping Project ( TMP for short ) was founded in 1978 by the British archaeologist and Egyptologist John Romer as part of the Theban Foundation and with the aim of creating an archaeological and geographical database of the ancient sites of Thebes . According to the self-image of the project, the surveying and mapping of the Theban necropolis , which focuses on the Valley of the Kings , represents a step towards the sustainable conservation of ancient Egyptian art and cultural treasures.

The Theban Mapping Project has been headed by the US Egyptologist Kent Weeks since 2006 .
