Gemellianus

Bronze fitting

Gemellianus was a provincial Roman metalworker and manufacturer who was based in Aquae Helveticae , today's Baden in Switzerland , in the second half of the 2nd century .

Gemellianus is known for a group of non-ferrous metal fittings for knife cases, which are called counter fittings in archaeological research . Some of the signed, openwork fittings bear the designation of origin and the name: “ AQVISHE GEMELLIANVS F ” (abbreviation of AQVISHE (lveticis) GEMELLIANUSF (ecit), translated “Made in Aquae Helveticae by Gemellianus”).

Of the 207 fittings recorded in 2002, only a part bears the name of the Gemellianus. Fittings of this type were safely manufactured in various workshops. Signatures of other masters or workshops were not yet known at that time. The knife cases made by Gemellianus seem to have been popular with visitors to the well-known thermal baths of Aquae Helveticae , because they came to light in various parts of the Roman Empire . The finds in Augusta Raurica ( Augst ) are numerous . Other finds are documented in Landsberg am Lech ( Augsburg area ) and Lauriacum (near Enns , Upper Austria ), but also in Dura Europos ( Syria ). Not all cases are originals from Aquae Helveticae, but copies from other workshops.
