Live and act

After graduating from the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in Aachen in 1970 , Theo Lieven studied mathematics at the RWTH Aachen . While still a student, he and his fellow student Rainer Fraling founded VERO GmbH in 1975, which was renamed Vobis Data Computer GmbH in 1981 . At this point, Lieven dropped out of mathematics to focus on running the company. After Metro AG had already taken over shares in Vobis in 1989, Lieven sold his remaining company shares in 1996 and retired into private life.

From 2001 to 2006 Lieven studied business administration and economics at the University of Hagen , received his doctorate in 2009 from the University of St. Gallen on the subject of “Brand personality and employee behavior in customer calls” and then began working on his habilitation . In the past he has also worked as a concert pianist, book author and lecturer at RWTH Aachen University. The promotion of young musicians was particularly important to Lieven and so in 2002, along with Martha Argerich and others, he was one of the founders of the International Piano Academy Lake Como and later founded the International Piano Foundation Theo Lieven zu Hamburg named after him .

In addition, Theo Lieven was in charge of the then second division soccer team Alemannia Aachen from February to May 2002 . In turbulent times, in which the club was facing bankruptcy, he expressed his disappointment over unpaid sponsorship money of 50,000 euros with his short-term resignation, which was intended as a special bonus for the players. "After three months I resigned as President of Alemannia Aachen. Not because I would have caused damage, but because I noticed that I would be worse rather than better. Then Horst Heinrichs became a very successful president. So you have to be able to give up, then failure is not a problem. You don't have to be the president of a football club, "he said in 2014 on the occasion of the award of the second Aachen Marketing Prize.

In 2000 his book to be entrepreneur means to be free was published by Hanser Verlag in Munich.
