Theodore "Theo" Markelis (born June 24, 1992 in Melbourne ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Markelis began playing football at the Greek-influenced Brunswick City club from the Brunswick district of Melbourne at the age of six , before moving to Green Gully SC at the age of ten . In the age groups U-13 to U-15 he was part of the national selection of Victoria and was the best scorer in the national junior championship in 2007 with eleven goals. A little later, at the age of 15, Markelis moved to the youth center of the Spanish club Valencia CF and played there for the following three years. In mid-2010 he left Valencia prematurely and joined Vicenza Calcio with his compatriot Steven Domenici and New Zealander Liam Graham after a trial training arranged by the Genova International School of Soccer . With the Australian U-20 selection , the striker took part in a trip to South America in April 2010 and won the AFF U-19 championship in Vietnam in July 2010. Shortly after his move to Vicenza, Markelis suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and was out for six months, so he did not play his first game for the Vicenza youth team at the Campionato Primavera until February 2011. Due to the injury, he also missed a possible participation in the U. -19 Asian Cup 2010 .

After two years in Italy, during which he could not go beyond appearances in the Vicenza youth team, he returned to Australia in mid-2012 when his contract expired and signed a two-year contract with the A-League team Melbourne Victory . For his debut in the A-League, Markelis came on as a substitute for the season opener in the derby against Melbourne Heart (final score 1: 2). After he could not assert himself in the course of the season and was only substituted on his five league appearances, his contract was dissolved in July 2013.
