Theo Meijer (judoka)

Theodorus Johannes "Theo" Meijer (born February 18, 1965 in Amersfoort ) is a former Dutch judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1992.

Athletic career

The 1.94 m tall Meijer fought as an adult mostly in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 95 kilograms. Of his six Dutch championship titles, he won three in the light heavyweight division and three in the open class.

In the weight class up to 86 kilograms, Meijer was third in the European Junior Championships in 1982 and third in the World Junior Championships in 1983. In 1984 he finished second at the Junior European Championships, now in the weight class up to 95 kilograms. In 1985 he became Junior European Champion in his new weight class. In 1986 and 1987 Meijer finished seventh at the European Championships. At the 1987 World Championships in Essen he won four fights and was only defeated in the final by the Japanese Hitoshi Sugai . At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , Meijer won his first two fights and then retired from Poland's Jacek Beutler .

In 1989 Meijer defeated the Pole Beutler in his first fight at the European Championships. After a semi-final defeat against Koba Kurtanidze from the Soviet Union, he won the fight against the Bulgarian Marko Walew for the bronze medal. A year later he finished fifth after defeats against the French Stéphane Traineau and against Koba Kurtanidze. At the European Championships in 1991 he defeated Traineau in the semifinals and defeated Givi Gaurgashvili from the Soviet Union in the final . In 1992 at the Olympic Games in Barcelona he was defeated by the Hungarian Antal Kovács in the semi-finals, in the battle for bronze he defeated the Estonian Indrek Pertelson . Meijer's active career ended in 1993.

Theo Meijer runs his own sports school with a focus on judo, taekwondo and fitness in Amersfoort.
