from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodolinda Hahnsson , b. Theodolinda Limón (born February 1, 1838 in Tyrvää , Pirkanmaa , † April 20, 1919 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish writer and translator.

Life

The first female author to write in Finnish was married to the linguist JA Hahnsson (1834–1888) and her second marriage to Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen . Her daughter Hilda Haahti (née Hahnsson) also became a well-known writer.

Works

Theodolinda Hahnsson's works are shaped by Christian piety and romantic idealism. The author denounces social grievances, which is why her works are also classified as realistic literature, but most of her stories have a happy ending.

"Huutolaiset"

Theodolinda Hahnsson's most important work is the novel "Huutolaiset" written in 1887 (Otava publishing house, 1918). It deals with the fate of three orphans who are put up for auction after their mother's death - a practice that was common in Scandinavia until the 1920s. The main character is little Iiri, who is sold to a hard-hearted large farmer and runs away from there. She finds a new home with the childless bell ringer couple, becomes a teacher and founds an orphanage to put an end to the inhumane practice of auctioning off children.
