Fontane monument on Fontaneplatz in Neuruppin

The Theodor Fontane monument in Neuruppin was designed by the sculptor Max Wiese . Fontane's son Friedrich served as a model . It shows the poet in bronze sitting on a granite bench. The right leg is crossed over the left, the right hand is holding a pen resting on the lap, while the left hand is casually holding a notebook. The hat is on the bench, the scarf and walking stick are on the armrest.

The inscription

"THEODOR FONTANE

Born in Neu-Ruppin d. 30 Dec 1819

Gest. to Berlin d. Sept. 20, 1898 "

can be found on the left side of the monument.

Just one year after Fontane's death in Berlin in 1898, a committee was founded there with the aim of erecting a memorial in his honor in Neuruppin, the city of his birth. A donation account was set up at the Sparkasse for the expenses. The city of Neuruppin and the Ruppin district together made 5,000 marks available for this. In 1906, the necessary funds were raised so that the sculptor Max Wiese could start his work. Fontane's son Friedrich acted as a model. Wiese had previously made the memorial for Karl Friedrich Schinkel in Neuruppin. The Neuruppiners honored Fontane as “Poet of the Mark”, as the inscription on the right side shows, with a big ceremony on June 8, 1907, at which the monument was unveiled. The place where the memorial stands was named Fontaneplatz in 2005 . The memorial was renovated in 2010 with donations from the Neuruppiner Lions Club .

On December 30th every year for Fontane's birthday from 11:00 a.m. at the monument, the Fontane honor of the Fontane city of Neuruppin takes place together with the Theodor Fontane Society eV.
