Theodor Evertz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodor Evertz (active around 1554) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance .

Live and act

Theodor Evertz has so far not known any vital dates, except that he was active in what was then the Netherlands (today's Netherlands and Belgium combined) in the middle of the 16th century. It has not yet been possible to determine where he worked as a composer. His identity emerges only from the few compositions that have come down to us. Three polyphonic Dutch songs by him in the collection Dat ierste boeck vanden nieuwe Duitsche liedekens (for three to six voices) were published by the publisher Jacob Baethen (Jacobus Bathenius) in Maastricht in 1554. One of the three songs was also printed in Leuven and Antwerp in 1572 in the Een Duijtsch musijck boeck collection . The lyrics on which the songs are based stand out for their simplicity. Only one of the songs, a Mailied, has survived in full.

meaning

The melodies used by Evertz certainly come from folk music. The alternating polyphonic and homophonic setting corresponds to the contemporary Dutch style for songs; this style is closer to Heinrich Isaac than to Josquin at a time when Ludwig Senfl was the outstanding composer.
