Theodor Heinrich Fischer (born December 10, 1824 in Gera ; † January 2, 1908 there ) was a German painter , drawing teacher and photographer .

Life

Theodor Fischer, son of the painter and drawing teacher Heinrich Fischer (1786–1850), graduated from high school in Gera, then studied from 1842 to 1848 at the art academy in Dresden . After graduation , Theodor Fischer performed portrait assignments , and in 1848 he took over the position of drawing teacher at the Rutheneum grammar school as the successor to his retired father . In 1862 he was appointed court painter by Prince Heinrich LXVII. Theodor Fischer, who was involved in the social life of Gera as the director of important festivities, died in early 1908 as a highly respected citizen at the age of 83.

Both as a painter and, alongside Carl Falke as a photographer, Fischer is one of the most important Gera artists of the 19th century . Fischer's artistic oeuvre spans 849 portraits, landscapes and compositions , in which he devoted his full strength to the portrait. Favorite motifs of Theodor Fischer's work are partly life-size portraits of Gera personalities and cityscapes of Gera. Rejecting the emerging industrialization with its accompanying economic and social changes, Theodor Fischer mostly avoids the symbol intended for it, the chimney, in his works . Instead, he portrays the entrepreneurial spirit and restlessness of the founding of the empire and the subsequent founding years , people who exude self-confidence and activity in partly life-size portraits, as well as the elegant society in street scenes. Regardless of his critical attitude towards industrialization, he used the new medium of photography. Many of his paintings were created from large-format photographs he had taken himself, and he had also operated a photographic studio since 1854.

In the year of the turn of the century, construction roads C, C1 and C2 in the 3rd construction phase of the Gera new development area Bieblach-Ost were named Theodor-Fischer-Straße . Two years later the name was changed to Maler-Fischer-Strasse , in additional memory of his father Heinrich Fischer.
