Theodor Kallifatides ( Greek Θοδωρής Καλλιφατίδης ; born March 12, 1938 in Molai , Greece ) is a Swedish writer of Greek origin.

life and work

Kallifatides emigrated from Greece to Sweden in 1964, where he studied philosophy at Stockholm University in the following years . Between 1969 and 1972 he was employed there as a teacher in the field of practical philosophy. As a writer, he made an early decision to use the Swedish language . Thematically, large parts of his work are in a field of tension between Greek and Swedish society. In 1969 he made his debut as a poet, but later worked primarily as a prose writer.

The first novel Utlänningar (“Foreigner”, 1970) deals with the situation of immigrants. In a later trilogy of novels with an autobiographical background, he described life in a Greek village during the Second World War . Love and eroticism are important motifs in the novels Kärleken (1978, German translation "Sehnen nach Sehnsucht", 1986) and En fallen ängel (1981). Kallifatides was editor-in-chief of a leading Swedish literary magazine, Bonniers Litterära Magasin ( BLM ) , between 1972 and 1976 . He has received several awards. With “A light case” (orig. Ett enkelt brott ) his first crime novel about the main character Kristina Vendel was published in Germany in 2001, in which he also deals with the subject of immigration. From the series, two more crime novels by Kallifatides have appeared in German with “The Sixth Passenger” and “The Cold Look”.
