Theodor Mayer (born November 9, 1839 in Munich ; † September 24, 1909 there ) was a German opera singer ( baritone / bass ).

Life

The son of a court sporer attended the Munich Conservatory and appeared for the first time in Ulm in 1865 as "Jacob" in Josef in Egypt by Étienne-Nicolas Méhul .

He took part in the war of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. After engagements in Bamberg and Linz, he made his successful debut as “Heerrufer” in Lohengrin in Munich and on September 1, 1871, joined the Association of the Munich Court Theater .

At a young age he sang second and first baritone roles, then he went on with great success to the downright bass buffo, in which he played for many years as “Bartolo” in Figaro's wedding , “Schulmeister” in Der Wildschütz , “Masetto” in Don Giovanni , “ Kellermeister ”in Undine (Lortzing) etc. was one of the audience's favorites. He was also the first “Alberich” in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung in Munich.

His amiable humor, which never degenerated unattractively or exceeded the limits of what was artistically permitted, and his simple but sharp talent for characterization always allowed him to be recognized as a real artist. Even after more than thirty years of service, he was regarded in the ensemble as a dutiful, hardworking artist, a sure bearer of smaller roles and a meritorious veteran of the Munich court stage.
