Life

Political activity

Although clearly to be assigned to political Catholicism , Scharmitzel had already quarreled with the center in 1919 . During the Nazi era, however, he found a field of activity as an organizer of oppositional connections within the framework of the Unitas and was therefore involved in the planning of a non-denominational party in Cologne in 1945. In June 1945, Scharmitzel helped prepare the founding of the CDU as a member of an eleven-person program commission in the Dominican monastery in Walberberg . Together with Leo Schwering and Peter Schaeven , Schwering knew the latter from working together in the Windthorstbund, he prepared the founding meeting of the Cologne Union on August 19, 1945 and chaired the meeting. Scharmitzel was also involved in the talks on founding the CDU-Westphalia in Bochum (August 2, 1945) and the CDU in the Rhineland.
