Theodor Sexl

Theodor Sexl (born November 8, 1899 in Vienna ; † 1967 ) was an Austrian theoretical physicist who dealt with hydrodynamics and nuclear physics .

Life

Sexl studied mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna with his doctorate in 1923. At the University of Vienna he was a student of Felix Ehrenhaft and, under his influence, dealt with hydrodynamics and statistical physics, first with a theory of the forces acting on a radiometer . This led to a scholarship to the Institute for Aerodynamics of the TH Aachen with Theodore von Kármán and Ludwig Hopf . There he dealt with the stability of the Poseuille flow in pipes and predicted an annular effect (pulsar effect of laminar flow in circular cylinder pipes), which was found experimentally by Edward Gick Richardson (1896–1960). Sexl became an assistant at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Vienna with Hans Thirring and turned to quantum mechanical scattering theory and nuclear physics (for example, scattering of alpha particles on nuclei with Eugen Guth (1905–1990), later known as Eugene Guth). He completed his habilitation in 1930 quantum mechanical treatment of nuclear physics and gave lectures on it in the summer semester of 1931 in Vienna. He later became a full professor in Vienna. He published around 70 scientific papers and supervised around 30 doctoral students.

He was the uncle of Roman Sexl .
