Life

Theodora Anna Doukaina, Greek Θεοδώρα Άννα Δούκαινα, was born in 1058 to Constantine X. Doukas and his second wife Eudokia Makrembolitissa . In 1075 she was married to the Doge of Venice Domenico Selvo in a lavish ceremony, in which she was crowned with the imperial tiara by her brother Michael VII Doukas . Theodora took her extensive Greek court with her to Venice, where her aristocratic behavior and her arrogant manner made her very unpopular over the years. Their table manners with forks , finger dishes , napkins and appliqués were viewed as Byzantine extravaganza.

The Dogaressa died very early in 1083 of a degenerative disease, which the Venetians viewed as a divine punishment for their excessive lifestyle.
