Theodore Ayrault Dodge

Theodore Ayrault Dodge (born May 28, 1842 in Pittsfield , Massachusetts , † October 26, 1909 in Paris ) was an American officer and military historian . He fought as a Union officer in the American Civil War . As a writer, he devoted himself to history, both the civil war and the great generals of antiquity and European history.

Life

Dodge received military training in Berlin and graduated from University College London in 1861 . In 1861 he returned to the United States and joined the Union Army . During the Civil War he rose to the rank of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, and lost his right leg in the Battle of Gettysburg . He was discharged from the Army in 1866 and served in the United States Department of War from 1864 to 1870 . After retiring, he moved to Paris, where he died. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery . Dodge married twice: Jane Marshall Neil in 1865 and Clara Isabel Bowden in 1893. The latter is buried with him.

In 1908 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
