Theodoros Manousis

Theodoros Manousis (Greek Θεόδωρος Μανούσης, * 1793 in Siatista , † 1858 in Athens ) was a Greek historian. From 1837 to 1858 he was the first holder of the chair of General and Greek History at the University of Athens and thus also an early Neo-Greekist .

Manousis' father was a wealthy businessman and sent him to study in Budapest and the universities of Leipzig and Göttingen . However, he lost both parents at an early age and came under the tutelage of an uncle in Vienna in 1808 . There he made the acquaintance of Theoklitos Farmakidis and was editor of the magazine Ερμής ο Λόγιος for a short time . After a stay in Italy, he returned to Greece in 1830, fled there again and finally came back in 1834. Initially, he served as a judge on the Areopagus and as a royal representative of the Ιερά Σύνοδος (the Holy Synod; 1835 to 1843). From the establishment of the University of Athens, he taught for over twenty years (1837 to 1858) as a professor of general history. In the academic year 1845 to 1846 he was rector of the university, from 1849 to 1850 dean of its philosophical faculty. He is part of the Greek Enlightenment (διαφωτισμός diaphotismos ).
