Theophilus (Ethiopia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theophilus or Tewoflos ( Ethiop . ቴዎፍሎስ , throne name Walda Ambasa ወልደ አምበሳ , "son of the lion") was Negus Negest ( Emperor ) of Ethiopia and a member of the Solomon dynasty from July 1, 1708 to October 14, 1711 . He was the brother of Iyasu I.

After the murder of his nephew Tekle Haymanot I , Theophilus came to the throne. He immediately set about punishing all those who were connected with the death of his brother Iyasu I. He accused his late nephew and former emperor Tekle Haymanot of kings and patricides. From then on he was known as Irgum ("the cursed"). Empress Malakotawit and one of her brothers were hanged in public, while another brother and a conspirator were impaled to death. Richard Pankhurst quoted James Bruce as saying that 37 people were executed in one afternoon. Theophilus also had his brother Iyasu I canonized.

His rule was restless. In 1709 Nebahne Johannes was proclaimed emperor in a revolt that lasted until July 1710. The circumstances of Theophilus' death are unclear.
