Theoretical meteorology

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The theoretical meteorology deals with the basics of atmospheric physics using methods of mathematical physics .

Important pioneers were Max Margules (Margules Front), Vilhelm Bjerknes ( polar front theory ), Carl-Gustaf Rossby ( Rossby waves ), Hans Ertel (hydrodynamic vortex theorems ) and Jule Gregory Charney ( quasi-geostrophic theory , baroclinic instability and numerical weather forecast ).

Nowadays, theoretical meteorology moves more and more into the background, as modern meteorological problems are mostly only dealt with using methods of numerical fluid mechanics (CFD).
