features

Characteristics of the moth

The moths have a wingspan of 85 to 110 millimeters. The coloring of Theretra boisduvalii is not very variable. The species can easily be distinguished from Theretra alecto because of its dark brown forewings and the mostly black colored hind wings . Theretra clotho is very similar, but the band that runs diagonally across the forewings is much stronger in this species. In Theretra boisduvalii it is also interrupted to single strokes in some individuals.

Characteristics of the caterpillars

The caterpillars are about 100 millimeters long and occur, as in the similar species T. alecto, in a red-brown, a purple-brown and a green color variant. Like T. alecto , they have yellow-rimmed eye spots on the first to eighth segment and have a blue, slightly curved, squat anal horn .

Egg and doll

The eggs are relatively large, around two millimeters in diameter. They are oval in shape and have a glossy pale green color. The pupa is 53 to 70 millimeters long and with its light brown color and the keel-shaped proboscis that protrudes well above the head, strongly resembles those of Theretra alecto .

Occurrence and habitat

The species occurs from southeastern Iran in the east to Sri Lanka and over the hill country bordering the Himalaya massif up to about 400 meters above sea level to Southeast Asia and Borneo . In late summer, the moths fly in as rare guests to southeastern Iran and very rarely to Turkey and Greece , where the species does not overwinter. However, the species has not been detected in Europe for several years. The edges of forests and agricultural areas in which grapevines (Vitaceae) are grown are settled.

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of Theretra boisduvalii . The adults are strongly attracted by artificial light sources and flowers. The caterpillars feed on grapevines ( Vitis ) and virgin vines ( Parthenocissus ).
