Thereva circumscripta is a fly from the family of the lynx flies (Therevidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 7 to 13 millimeters, with the males being a minimum of 9.5 millimeters long. The third to sixth, sometimes also the second abdomen segment is white-yellow or golden-yellow in color and unpolluted. The underside of the body is light gray and lightly yellowish hairy. The males are densely black to black-brown on the upper side of the body and hairy yellow-brown on the head. Two longitudinal lines are clearly visible on the mesonotum . The wings are slightly dark brown in color and have a black-brown wing mark. The forehead calluses are twice as wide as high in the female.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is widespread in Central and Southern Europe. The adults are found from May to August in sandy habitats in the shrub layer. The larvae develop in humus and sludge.
