Hermann Loew

Friedrich Hermann Loew (born July 19, 1807 in Weißenfels , † April 21, 1879 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German entomologist .

Life

Hermann Loew studied at the University of Halle and was a teacher of mathematics and natural history at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Poznan and later worked as a professor and director of the secondary school in Meseritz . He was also politically active and was a member of the Frankfurt National Assembly (in which his brother Friedrich Loew was also represented) from June 18, 1848 to May 20, 1849 , and of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1874 to 1876 . In 1868 he gave up his teaching profession, moved to Guben and devoted himself to entomology. In 1876 he suffered a stroke and afterwards became increasingly paralyzed and, moreover, no longer capable of intellectual work.

His scientific achievements include, in particular, his work on flies (Insecta: Diptera). He published numerous scientific papers from 1840 to 1878 and described around 4000 new species.

Loew described numerous predatory flies (Asilidae) for the first time. Most of his collection (mostly dipteras from Europe) is now in the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. It was bought by the Prussian state after Loew's death and, according to the then curator Paul Stein, comprised around 60,000 specimens of 7,500 species.

He worked closely with Carl Robert Osten-Sacken on Diptera from North America. A joint collection went to the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard. In the collaboration, Osten-Sacken mostly left the initial descriptions to Loew and translated his writings into English.

He was married from 1834. The marriage lasted until Loew's death. Of his seven children, three sons survived him. He is buried in Halle.
