The buff-necked ibis ( Theristicus caudatus ) is a species of bird in the family of ibises and spoonbills and lives in South America .
Appearance
The head and neck of the 71 to 76 cm tall white-necked ibis are brownish, the crown darker, the neck lighter. The wings are gray with a whitish field on the leading edge. The downward curved bill is dark gray, the legs are red. Behind the beak and around the eye there is a black field of vision. The white-necked ibis resembles the black- necked ibis in terms of plumage , but the neck is lighter and the white wing field is striking. There is no pronounced gender dimorphism ; the young birds have a narrow striped brown neck. The subspecies hyperorius has a paler neck and less white on the wing.
distribution and habitat
The white-necked ibis occurs on the north coast of South America from Colombia and Venezuela to Guiana . To the south, the distribution area extends over all of Brazil to Mato Grosso and northern Argentina and Uruguay . The birds of this species prefer open landscapes, including river and lake banks and wetlands. But they can also often be observed at a greater distance from water, for example on burned fields. The IUCN classifies the species as not endangered , the global population is estimated between 25,000 and 100,000.
food
The white-necked ibis feeds on worms , clams , crustaceans , large insects , snails , amphibians and small mammals .
Reproduction
The white-necked ibis breed in trees or on rocks, mostly in loose colonies. The clutch consists of two to four eggs.
