The fountain in the market, fountain basin

The Burtscheid thermal fountain is located in the Aachen district of Burtscheid , North Rhine-Westphalia on the Burtscheider market and is therefore also known as the market fountain . Since it is a public fountain , thermal water can be taken from there free of charge.

General

The fountain is fed by the hottest thermal spring in Burtscheid , the Landesbadquelle. The water temperature of individual spring pre-openings of the Landesbadquelle reaches a maximum of 72 ° C, the outlet temperature at the well is 67 ° C according to new measurements (as of 2016).

Today's fountain made of red-brown ceramic was inaugurated on August 8, 1953. The design of the fountain comes from the architect Hanns Compernaß, who also built the fountain. It consists of a four-meter-high stele and a wall that encloses an ornamental plant that is adjacent to the neighboring buildings. The semicircular fountain basin, into which the thermal water flows from three outlets, is located on this wall. The sides of the stele are decorated with reliefs of Burtscheider motifs by the sculptor Rita Brück-Landvogt. In front they show an abbess of the Cistercian Sisters , who is reminiscent of the imperial abbey of Burtscheid and the swan as Burtscheid's heraldic animal, on the left a Benedictine monk standing by a sick person for the Burtscheid spa, on the right Burtscheid citizens, a man with a razor and a woman with a spindle and on the back an abbot Gregory of Calabria (Gregor von Burtscheid) .

The thermal fountain is one of the architectural monuments of the city of Aachen.

renovated well, 2011

Even before the creation of today's fountain, there were public thermal water fountains on Burtscheider Markt and the adjoining Dammstrasse, most recently in addition to the cooking fountain , which was already mentioned in 1425 as “Hot Born buysen dem Driesch” and covered in 1939, and the fountain , which is reminiscent of a hoop skirt , and called a “ crinoline” fountain in front of the Schwertbad as well as the so-called " Kleinheiss " and " Großheiss " at the confluence of the main street with the Burtscheider market.

Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) visited Aachen on the occasion of Charles V's coronation as emperor in October 1520. The artist bathed in the thermal springs of Burtscheid during his three-week stay.

In the course of the renovation, the lower thermal water outlet was closed from autumn 2009. The original plan to drain the thermal water from the upper three bronze taps on cords so that it would no longer be possible to drink thermal water uncontrolled in the future was abandoned after violent protests among the population. A fierce controversy arose around this decision of the city, which is based on an EU bill on the limit values for the constituents of drinking water. A final assessment of the situation has not yet been made (as of February 2012).
