Theudelapius (Spoleto)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theudelapius (also Teudelapius, Theudalaupus, Theodelap ; † 653 ) was from 601 to 653 dux of the Longobard Duchy of Spoleto .

Life

Theudelapius was a son of dux Faroald I , whom Ariulf succeeded as ruler after his death in 591 . After Ariulf's death around 601 there were succession disputes between two sons of Faroald I, in which Theudelapius was able to prevail.

His long reign of over 50 years contributed significantly to the independence of Spoleto from the kingship in Pavia, especially since King Adaloald was still a child when he ascended the throne and suffered from a mental illness. Theudelapius is associated with the first construction of today's cathedral of Spoleto and the aqueduct Il Ponte delle Torri and is said to have built other structures. In the historical sources nothing is reported of Theudelapius' reign, so that most historians assume a very peaceful time.

When Theudelapius died in 653, Atto was his successor.
