Faroald I (Spoleto)
Faroald I. (also Faruald ; † 591 ) was from 570 to 591 dux of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto .
Life
The Lombards invaded central Italy around 570, coming from the north, pushing the Byzantines back to their fortified places on the coast. There were no major battles, rather the country was penetrated by so-called farae , larger wandering associations of Lombards, who were both settlers and armed troops and each under the leadership of a leader who, after the conquest of the land, became the duke of the occupied territory has been. For the Lombards advancing to Spoleto, Faroald took over this role, who was initially under the formal sovereignty of the first two Lombard kings Alboin and Cleph , during the ten-year kingship interregnum that followed Cleph's death (574-584) but ruled completely sovereign. So he continued the fight against Byzantium in order to expand his dominion.
Faroald first conquered the areas of Nursia , Spoleto and Amiternum around 570 , whereby he proceeded ruthlessly against Catholic clergy and they z. B. in Spoleto replaced by Arian bishops.
Classis , the port of Ravenna , was sacked by Faroald in 579. On November 26, 579, Pope Pelagius II was consecrated without confirmation from the emperor, since Rome was besieged by the Lombards at that time, presumably under Faroald's leadership.
Around 585 the Longobard dux Droctulft had defected to the Byzantines and around 588 freed the port of Classis from the Longobards on behalf of patricius Smaragdus . King Authari then made a three-year peace with Smaragdus.
Faroald had (at least) two sons, one of whom, Theudelapius, later also became dux of Spoleto.
When Faroald died in 591, Ariulf succeeded him.
