Thief: Deadly Shadows is the third installment in the Thief series . Unlike the two predecessors, it was developed by the development studio Ion Storm Austin . The game was released in Germany for Windows and Xbox on June 11, 2004 by Eidos Interactive .

In the third part the faction of the Guardians is the focus of the plot. Friar Artemus gives Garret an order to steal an artifact from the Hammerites and one of the Gentiles. In return, he should get access to the prophecies from the order. Garret learns that the Dark Age was long predicted. The information from the order also suggests that the so-called Compendium of Shame holds further information on the prophecy ready. During his investigation, Garret continues to discover that there must be a traitor in the ranks of the Order.

Gameplay

Thief: Deadly Shadows , unlike its predecessors, either from the first-person or third-person perspective are played. Between the missions, the player can explore the city for the first time, which is split into several individual maps, and shop there at dealers or accept side missions. As a new movement command, the main character Garret was able to lean against walls similar to Splinter Cell .

Development history

Thief: Deadly Shadows is the first title in the Thief series that was no longer developed by series creators Looking Glass Studios after it was disbanded in 2000 due to financial problems. Instead, rights holder Eidos commissioned the development studio Ion Storm Austin with the development. Randy Smith was the project manager . With the Xbox version, the series was also released for the first time on game consoles. As with the recently published Deus Ex: Invisible War, the technical basis of the work was the Unreal Engine 2 . Unlike its predecessor, the game was not dubbed for the German-speaking market.

Thief: Deadly Shadows received mostly positive ratings. The PC version performed slightly better on average ( Metacritic : 85 out of 100 / Gamerankings : 84.21%) than the Xbox version (82 / 81.51%).
