Thierry Giet

Thierry Giet (born July 21, 1958 in Ougrée ) is a judge at the Belgian Constitutional Court . Until 2013 he was a lawyer and politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS), and from 2011 to 2013 acting president of the PS. Furthermore, Giet was a member of the federal Chamber of Deputies and a councilor in Sprimont .

Life

Thierry Giet is the son of the former General Procurator at the Court of Appeal in Liège, Léon Giet, and a primary school teacher. He studied law at the University of Liège and worked as a lawyer since 1981.

In his hometown Sprimont he was active for the PS at a young age and made it into the local council for the first time in 1983. He made his entry into national politics as an advisor in the cabinet of ministers of Laurette Onkelinx (PS).

In 1995 Giet became a member of the federal Chamber of Deputies , replacing Michel Daerden (PS), who in turn was appointed Minister of Transport. Thiery Giet has been able to defend his mandate since then, and from 2004 he was also chairman of the PS group in the chamber.

On December 6, 2011, Giet was also acting party president of the PS after Elio Di Rupo (PS), who has since been appointed Prime Minister, resigned from this office. He finally handed over this office to Paul Magnette (PS) in 2013 after internal party elections .

A little later, on June 21, 2013, Giet was elected as judge at the Belgian Constitutional Court. He resigned from all political offices.

Thierry Giet is a bearer of the Leopold Order . He is divorced and has two children.
