Mr. Brainwash , actually Thierry Guetta , (* 1966 in Garges-lès-Gonesse near Paris ) is a French street artist who played a leading role in the film Exit Through the Gift Shop .

Life

According to Exit Through the Gift Shop, Guetta made a film about his cousin, the graffiti artist Invader, and met Banksy in 2005 . This is said to have persuaded him to let him direct and do the art himself. His career in the arts is seen as a gag by Banksy who wanted to show that commercial street art doesn't require talent and skill. Banksy said of him, "Mr. Brainwash is a force of nature, he's a phenomenon. And I don't mean that in a good way. ”(Mr. Brainwash is a force of nature, a phenomenon. And I don't mean that in a positive sense.) Banksy's introductory words to his film also suggest a satirical background: "I guess my ambition was to make a film that would do for graffiti art what 'The Karate Kid' did for martial arts - a film that would get every schoolkid in the world picking up a spray can and having a go… As it turns out, I think we might have a film that does for street art what 'Jaws' did for waterskiing. "

Guetta is, alongside Banksy , the main character in the ironic documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop from 2010.

speculation

The opinion stubbornly persists that Thierry Guetta is a fictional person or even Banksy himself. This is mainly due to the fact that there are commentators who refer to the film Exit Through the Gift Shop as a mockumentary . However, the opposite opinion is also held.

In an interview, the director vehemently denies the allegations that the film is fictional.

• In response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011, Mr. Brainwash published a screen print entitled One Love on March 18, 2011 , on which Albert Einstein uses paint and brush to transform the rising sun of the Japanese flag into a heart.
