Thingin is a modern jazz - live album of Lee Konitz , Attila Zoller and Don Friedman . It was recorded on March 30, 1995 in the Singsaal Feld of the secondary school in Thalwil and was released in 1996 by HatHut Records .

background

Alto saxophonist Lee Konitz (1927–2020), guitarist Attila Zoller (1927–1998) and pianist Don Friedman (1935–2016) had worked together in different formations in the previous decades; In 1962 Zoller and Friedman played with Herbie Mann , Konitz and Zoller with Albert Mangelsdorff in 1968 ( Zo-Ko-Ma , MPS, with Barre Phillips and Stu Martin ). In addition to the music of Lennie Tristano and Jimmy Giuffre , whose conception of "abstract" construction and rhythmic interplay is reflected in several compositions, the saxophone-guitar-piano trio of Hans Koller , Attila Zoller and Martial Solal from 1965 represents one another point of reference ( Zoller Koller Solal , SABA Records ). Konitz first recorded the title track “Thingin '” in 1985 with his quintet with Gary Foster ; from then on it was part of his repertoire and was still frequently recorded by him.

reception

Harvey Pekar praised the very relaxed playing of the three musicians in JazzTimes and particularly emphasized their interpretation of the standard "Alone Together" and the improvisation in the title track "Thingin", in which the chord progression of " All the Things You Are " was used. “It's a pleasure to hear them work. Not only are they a bit older; they also learned a lot from it. Her playing is largely free of clichés and her contrapuntal work is entirely consistent. The unaccompanied game of Friedman in "Images" and Zollers in "Cloisterbells" is masterful; they never run out of ideas; their game is always coherent. "

Steve Loewy rated the album in Allmusic with three (out of five) stars and said the album satisfied a wide range of listeners. The trio gently swarm with nuanced patterns and exquisite precision, creating small masterpieces of graceful development. The unique instrumentation fits precisely to Konitz's style and brings back memories of earlier performances. Zoller adds a pleasant atmosphere to the whole thing with his dry, warbling posture. With its beautiful and soft sound, relaxed style and sophisticated harmonies, the album is an important contribution to Konitz's discography.

Editor's note

The album was re-released by HatHut Records in 2000 and 2010 with a different front cover design and blurb. The original cover showed the three musicians; the later editions the photograph of a power pole by Luca Buti.
