Thirsty Moon is a German Krautrock band from the 1970s. It is assigned to the area of jazz-rock fusion .

history

Beginnings

The brothers Norbert and Jürgen Drogies began to be active in the Bremen "beat music scene" in the 1960s. The constellation at that time was such that Jürgen played the guitar and Norbert, who was only 15 years old when he first appeared in "Lila Eule", was behind the drums. The brothers' first band was called The Outcasts . In addition to the mostly usual cover versions at the time, some of the first own pieces were played.

founding

After a short interlude as DRP (= Drogies-Ranwig-Pickert) and a theater project, Thirsty Moon was founded in the early 1970s . In the original line-up, they were Norbert Drogies, Jürgen Drogies, Michael Kobs, Harald Konietzko, Erwin Noack, Willi Pape, and Hans-Werner Ranwig. Shortly before recording the second album, Ranwig left the band, guitarist and singer Siegfried Pisalla joined the group and Andreas Helms, who had previously played bass with DRP and Tomorrow Too, temporarily replaced Harald Konietzko on bass.

Konietzko and Pisalla worked together in the Bremen formation “Tomorrow Too” from 1969-71, which can be regarded as the region's first significant prog rock band. The self-written song material of this band was able to convince the producers of Nektar in 1970 to offer the band a record deal, which the band treated hesitantly and was not able to redeem on time due to personnel turbulence. They played in renowned clubs such as the "Jaguar" in Herford, in which Jimi Hendrix had previously performed several times.

Saxophonist and flautist Willi Pape worked in an advertising agency and therefore knew the beer brand Thirsty Moon, on which the band name was based. Not everyone understood this acoustically, that's why "Thursday Moon" was sometimes said. Thirsty Moon only played his own compositions. The changing line-ups brought jazz influence into the music at times.
