life and work

Thom Andersen was born in 1943 in Chicago and taught from 1987 until his retirement as professor of film theory at the California Institute of the Arts .

Andersen's film Eadweard Muybridge, Zoopraxographer (1975, color, 59 minutes) premiered in 1975 at the Whitney Museum of American Art and was shown at documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 . On the one hand, the film tells biographical information about the photographer Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904), on the other hand, his historical series recordings are animated by movements. Both are linked in an irritating way.

Los Angeles Plays Itself (2003, black and white, 169 minutes) is a documentary that was created from footage on the subject of Los Angeles and our own documentary recordings.

In Reconversão (2012, color, 68 minutes) he portrayed the work of the Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura on the basis of 17 works and shows their origins and backgrounds with the help of quotations from the architect. Andersen filmed in the style of the early form of cinema with only two frames per second for increased attention and effect of the images shown.
