Garo Paylan
Garo (Garabed) Paylan ( Armenian Կարո Փայլան , * 1972 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish teacher and member of parliament of Armenian descent. He is an elected member of the Grand National Assembly .
Paylan's family is from Malatya and moved to Istanbul in 1969, where Garo was born in 1972. He graduated from the Faculty of Business Management at Istanbul University . In the 2015 parliamentary elections , he won a mandate for the People's Democratic Party (HDP) in the Istanbul II constituency (alongside Selina Özuzun Doğan from the CHP and Markar Esayan from the AKP as one of a total of three Armenians in this election ). Before he became a member of parliament, the qualified business economist was a teacher and coordinator for Armenian schools in Istanbul. He was re-elected in the new election in November of the same year. Since then he has been a member of the parliamentary committee for planning and budget.
He openly criticizes the denial of the Armenian genocide and was therefore frequently assaulted and booed in parliament. During a meeting for a constitutional amendment on May 2, 2016, Paylan was involved in a brawl in which Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ held him responsible for an argument the previous week.
Paylan complains about racist remarks about his Armenian origins; The Turkish Human Rights Association protested the violence against him .
In April 2018, the public prosecutor's office sought to lift Paylan’s parliamentary immunity for insulting Turks and the President.
On June 24, 2018, he was re-elected as a member of the People's Democratic Party in the Grand National Assembly.
