The İnsan Hakları Derneği (İHD), in German human rights association, is an association based in Ankara that campaigns for the observance of human rights in Turkey .

The İHD has 34 branches and around 17,000 members. It is represented in three other cities.

history

The organization was founded on July 17, 1986 by 98 people. This included lawyers, journalists, intellectuals, but above all relatives of political prisoners. She is committed to upholding human rights in all areas. In 1992 the statutes of the İHD were extended to include humanitarian aspects in accordance with the Geneva Conventions . Since then, human rights violations by armed groups in the event of war have also been criticized.

Structure and campaigns

The board of directors, which has 24 members, is elected at the general assembly that takes place every two years. Both the headquarters in Ankara and the branches have set up commissions on issues such as the position of the Kurds in Turkey , the rights of women and children, deprivation of liberty after political judgments and torture , as required .

On the basis of human rights , it stands up against the death penalty , torture and militarism . The IHD represents the principles of fair trials, freedom of expression and religion, and freedom of assembly .

Some of the numerous campaigns of the association were: freedom of thought (2001), general amnesty (1999), abolition of the death penalty (1999), freedom of thought (1999), abolition of the State Security Courts (1997). In 2004 a project "Do not be silent in the face of torture" ( İşkenceye Sessiz Kalma ) was launched.

Persecution situation

Since it was founded, the İHD has had to struggle with legal interference in its work as well as direct violence from individuals or nationalistically motivated groups. In addition, the association states on its website that more than 400 proceedings have been opened against members of the association's board of directors. The governors of individual provinces closed the branches a total of 30 times. Sixty preliminary and criminal proceedings were opened against the chairman of the Diyarbakır branch , which was closed between 1997 and 2000, Osman Baydemir . In 2000, 60 proceedings were also opened against the Izmir branch. For speaking in 1995 and 1996, former chairman Akın Birdal was sentenced to 20 months in prison, of which he served 14 months.

In addition, the İHD lists 14 people who were murdered as members of the association. On May 12, 1998, Akın Birdal narrowly escaped death when two attackers fired 14 shots at him in the İHD office. On November 25, 1999, a group of 30–35 people from the party of the Nationalist Movement (MHP) attacked the office and beat up the new chairman Hüsnü Öndül . Amnesty International has taken urgent action to warn of threats to the activists in İHD, including: a. through an action for Eren Keskin , chairwoman of the Istanbul branch.
