The first season aired in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on ITV . The German-language first broadcast was on RTL II . Except for the season finale, all of the episodes are adaptations of Railway Series stories by Wilbert Awdry , rewritten by Britt Allcroft and David Mitton. Mitton directed all of the episodes.

Thomas and his loyal friends

Thomas and his loyal friends (English. Jack and the Sodor Construction Company ) was a planned spin-off of the series. The spin-off pursued the same concept, only instead of locomotives with construction site vehicles . It was planned during season six, and the main characters in season six episodes Jack Jumps In and A Friend in Need were introduced to the audience. During the production of the seventh season, the spin-off went into production with 26 planned episodes. When the first 13 episodes were completed, the project was canceled after the takeover by HiT Entertainment. It wasn't until 2006, three years later, that all 13 episodes were released on British DVD. In 2007, 11 episodes were also released on German DVD.
