Thomas (Armenia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas ( Armenian Թոմաս , Middle Greek Θωμάς ; † after 1170 probably in Antioch ) was ruler for the little Armenian prince Ruben II from 1169 to 1170 .

Life

Thomas was a relative (possibly the father-in-law) of Prince Thoros II , who abdicated in 1169 in favor of his son Ruben and entered a monastery . Because Ruben was still a small child, Thomas was installed as guardian and regent. However, Thoros' brother Mleh from his exile at the court of the Zengid - Emir Nur ad-Din in Aleppo also made claims to rule over Cilicia . Since there was no peaceful agreement between the two parties, Mleh invaded Cilicia in 1170 with a Turkish force. Thomas entrusted Ruben to the Catholicos Nerses IV. Schnorhali in Hromkla and fled to Antioch. His protégé was tracked down by Mleh's captors and killed.
