Thomas Becker (architect)

Thomas Karl Heinrich Becker (born July 20, 1953 in Frankfurt / Main ; † March 28, 2006 at Cremona in Italy ) was a German architect .

Life

Thomas Becker was the second child of Helene Becker, née Rahms, and Hans Becker. He grew up in Oberursel , went to the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main, studied architecture at the Technical University of Berlin from 1973 , from 1977 to 1979 at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) in London and then went to Italy, where he worked as a graduate in the studio of Alberto Grimoldi and Lorenzo Berni.

His work as an architect focused on urban planning, house building and interior design. He participated in the restoration of the Palazzo della Ragione in Milan , which started his interest in existing buildings and their transformation. His commitment to the preservation of monuments should be combined with that of ecological building .

His theoretical work is reflected in texts based, among other things, on the critical theory of the Frankfurt School . He criticized Aldo Rossi's building , which was built on Rauchstrasse as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in 1987 , in the article A building that could also be a building / Aldo Rossi's ancestors and his building in Berlin .

An example of this connection between monument preservation and ecological building is the studio for a sculptor, Studio-laboratorio di scultura, in Cernusco sul Naviglio 1987, which was selected for the Premio Palladio in 1988 and at the exhibition Premio internazionale di architettura Andrea Palladio in 1988 in Milan and was published in the exhibition catalog. The project was worked on together with the architect Serena Omodeo Salé.
