Willy Schottroff

Willy Schottroff (born January 25, 1931 in Frankfurt am Main ; † May 2, 1997 in Kassel ) was a German Protestant theologian ( Old Testament scholar ) and university professor.

Life

1951–53, Schottroff studied Protestant theology at Bethel , continued his studies in Tübingen from 1953–58 and now also dealt with archeology , philology and cultural history . In April 1958 he passed his first theological exam. After a stay abroad in Paris in 1958/59, the Vicariate in Brussels followed in 1960 . In 1961 he was in Mainz because one of Friedrichshorst supervised dissertation doctorate and married on July 21, 1961 Luise Klein from Berlin, which itself as Luise Schottroff became known as profiled theologian. From the end of July of this year to the autumn of 1962, he continued his studies in Jerusalem, where he added Semitic epigraphy and Egyptology to archeology and Semitic studies. He then became an assistant at the University of Mainz, where he completed his habilitation in 1964 and worked as a private lecturer . In August 1971 he was appointed adjunct professor in Mainz, but in the same year he received a call to the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he taught as a professor for the Old Testament until his retirement in 1996.

Together with Paul Mendes-Flohr, he began to prepare an edition of the complete works of Martin Buber , but had to hand this project over to Peter Schäfer due to a serious illness .

His research focused on biblical topography, Old Testament legal issues, liberation theology and the socio-historical interpretation of biblical texts - right up to Christian-Jewish dialogue .
