Depiction of the Gévaudan beast, referred to as a hyena in the title

Thomas Larsen Borup (* 25. March 1726 , † 27. April 1770 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish woodcutter , Xylograph and letterpress he of the rococo .

Life

Borup lived and worked in Copenhagen, where he had a print shop at Store Helliggeiststræde 150 from 1756. His printing blocks continued to be used after his death; his widow Rebecca, b. Buch, with whom he had a daughter named Elisabeth Magdalene in 1768, married the German printer Johan Rudolph Thiele in 1771 . Thiele also set up a bookshop there. He developed into the largest producer of illustrated flyers of his time.

Borup had also created picture sheets . Topics were e.g. B. the representation of different professions such as ox slaughter, book printer or writer; But there are also depictions of a Turkish procession , a Croat with his wife, or a troupe of horsemen. Many of his woodcuts have survived in a colored state, such as when Caroline Mathilde entered Copenhagen on November 8, 1766. His works also include the depiction of the so-called hyena , the so-called beast of Gévaudan , which tore numerous people in Gévaudan and neighboring areas. Some of his works can be found in the royal collection of engravings in the Statens Museum vor Kunst in Copenhagen.

From the year 1762 comes a macabre dance picture sequence called Døde-Dands ( Det menneskelige Livs Flug eller Dode-Dands ), on the front page of which Borup is mentioned. This dance of death is an anonymous work by the writer Niels Prahl . It can be assumed that the illustrations (e.g. Døden til Doctoren ) were made by Borup, who also signed the introduction, and that he published the book. It was reprinted in 1770, 1814, and 1967.
