Thomas Faed
Thomas Faed (born June 8, 1826 in Gatehouse of Fleet , Kirkcudbrightshire , Scotland , † August 17, 1900 in London ) was a British painter of realism .
His brother and first teacher was John Faed . He was trained at Edinburgh College of Art , in 1849 he became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy with the picture Scott and his friends , three years later he went to London, became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1861 and an academician in 1864. In 1875 he became an honorary member of the Vienna Academy . In 1893 he retired. He painted a remarkable number of pictures, three of them ( The Silken Gown , Faults on Both Sides and The Highland Mother ) were exhibited in the National Gallery of British Art .
Faed especially painted scenes from the popular life of the Scottish highlands and the working classes. His aptly drawn characters earned him popularity with the public, but criticism criticized his too tame and even style and color scheme.
