John Faed

John Faed (born August 31, 1819 in Burley Mill , Kirkcudbrightshire in Scotland , † October 22, 1902 in Ardmore ) was a Scottish painter .

Faed came to the Edinburgh Academy in 1841 and began making small genre paintings the following year. In 1850 he made himself known through an image: Shakespeare and His Contemporaries , and later through two series of illustrations: The Farmer's Sunday Evening and the Soldier's Return . In 1864 he moved to London .

Of his genre pictures, executed here with great care, but without deep feeling, are to be mentioned:

  • The rifle festival ,
  • The stirrup drink ,
  • The forester's daughter ,
  • Goldsmith in his study ,
  • The winding down ,
  • The old basket weaver ,
  • The old shopkeeper and
  • After the win .

His brother Thomas Faed was also a painter.
