Thomas Gries (born April 26, 1964 in Cologne ) is a full professor at the Institute for Textile Technology (ITA) at RWTH Aachen University .

Life

From 1984 Gries studied industrial engineering and engineering . After completing his intermediate diploma, he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation .

In the period from 1990 to 1995 , Gries received his doctorate in engineering with distinction. He then became deputy technology manager at Lurgi . In this capacity, he traveled to Southeast Asia, particularly Taiwan, Korea and China. He was later promoted to head of fiber and textile technology.

In 1999 he was offered a position at RWTH Aachen University as the successor to Prof. Burkhard Wulfhorst at the Institute for Textile Technology (ITA). In April 2001 he became head of the institute there. As head, he was responsible for the “Tailored Reinforcement Textiles” concept.

Thomas Gries is a member of the Association of German Engineers and the German Business Association and works in two associations as a group leader for specific topics. He is the coordinator of the international high-potential exchange program Unitech. At the university he heads the advisory board for industrial engineering and the research area, an internal funding organization for interdisciplinary research.

Thomas Gries plays the viola and also brought his musical passion to his academic work by making strings out of carbon in collaboration with an instrument maker . As a member of the Aachener Karlsverein , he supports the preservation of Aachen antiquity, the cathedral and the coronation hall of the Aachen cathedral .

honors and awards

  • 2012 first place in the university competition ZukunftErzügeNRW, together with Michael Glowania. The two had discovered that pitch-based carbon fibers have the same thermal conductivity as alloy steel. This now makes it possible to use lighter parts in aircraft and vehicle construction.
  • 2013 JEC Innovation Award together with Michael Glowania.
  • 2013 honorary professorship at Lomonosov University in Moscow .
  • Elected to the German Academy of Engineering Sciences (acatech) in 2016.
  • 2017 RWTH Innovation Award to Thomas Gries and his 4D textile group for the project "4D Textile - Additive Manufacturing of Hybrid Materials for Time-Changing Applications".
