Thomas Hänscheid

Thomas Hänscheid (born September 30, 1964 in Eitorf ) is a German doctor. He has been teaching at the Institute of Microbiology at the University of Lisbon since 2001 .

Life

Hänscheid completed his Abitur in 1984 at the Siegtal-Gymnasium Eitorf and then studied human medicine in Bonn and Frankfurt am Main , which he completed with a dissertation in the field of infectious diseases / microbiology.

He worked as an internist in the UK for eight years, studying infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV . In 1998 he went to Lisbon. He then worked at the Hospital de Santa Maria until 2010, specializing in clinical pathology with a focus on microbiology.

Research priorities

His research interests are the development of new diagnostic tests for malaria , schistosomiasis and bacterial diseases based on inexpensive fluorescence microscopy and image and flow cytometry as well as the immunopathogenic role of the malaria pigment. He also dealt with the interactions of pathogens, in particular malaria with tuberculosis, non-typhoid salmonella or other pathogens of the respiratory tract.

He works closely with the medical research unit of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné ( Gabon ), which focuses on clinical research on malaria and tuberculosis.
