Thomas J. Scheff

Thomas J. Scheff (* 1929 ) is an American sociologist who specializes primarily in emotions , social relationships , mental illness , justice, and collective violence . He received a Bachelor of Arts in physics from the University of Arizona in 1950 and a PhD in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1960 . He taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1959 to 1963 before becoming Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara .
