Thomas James

Thomas James (* 1593 ; † 1635 ) was an English seafarer who made a name for himself while searching for the Northwest Passage and exploring the Hudson Bay .

In 1631 James set out for the Hudson Bay with the ship Henrietta Maria . He explored the coast of the bay, the southern part today bears his name ( James Bay ). After wintering on Charlton Island , he continued his expedition to the Arctic Ocean in the summer of 1632 .

James, who was close to death several times during his expedition and ultimately failed, summarized his experiences in the book The Strange and Dangerous Voyage of Captaine Thomas James (1633). This work supposedly inspired the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge to write the poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".
