Thomas Meinertz

Thomas Meinertz (born August 16, 1944 in Warendorf ) is a German cardiologist . He was director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Cardiology and Angiology of the University Heart Center at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) and for many years chairman of the board of the Deutsche Herzstiftung eV Today Meinertz runs an internal practice in Hamburg and is editor-in-chief of all publications of the German Heart Foundation, including the quarterly one "HERZ heute" magazine.

Life and work

Meinertz passed his Abitur in 1964. He studied medicine in Mainz and Innsbruck, passed the medical state examination in 1970 and then received a scholarship from the German Research Foundation. From 1981 to 1983 he was senior physician at the Second Medical Clinic at the University of Mainz, and from 1984 to 1989 he was senior physician in the Department of Internal Medicine II at the University Clinic Freiburg . From 1989 on he worked as chief physician of the 2nd Medical Clinic of the General Hospital St. Georg in Hamburg, before he took over the chair of internal medicine / cardiology at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in 1994 , where he also became director of the cardiology department. In 1996 he was appointed director of the Medical Clinic III of the UKE, and in 2004 he was appointed director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Cardiology and Angiology there.

The focus of his work and research was and is the clinical pharmacology of active substances in the heart, the diagnosis and therapy of cardiac arrhythmias , especially atrial fibrillation , the treatment of heart valve defects , coronary heart diseases and heart failure . He has been professor emeritus since 2011 .

From 2003 to 2005 Meinertz was President of the German Society for Cardiology . From 2010 to 2018 he was chairman of the board of the Deutsche Herzstiftung eV , which with over 100,000 members is one of the largest patient organizations in German-speaking countries. He has been editor-in-chief of the Deutsche Herzstiftung since 2018 and is responsible for all of the organization's publications, including the quarterly magazine HERZ heute with a circulation of 160,000 copies.

Publications

Meinertz has published more than 400 scientific articles in national and international specialist publications. He was editor of the Zeitschrift für Kardiolgie ( Clinical Research in Cardiologiy ) and sat on the editorial board of numerous other journals. He was co-editor of the textbook Internal Medicine and the Handbook of Therapy .
