Thomas Mrsic-Flogel (born March 2, 1975 in Zagreb ) is a British neurobiologist and professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel , Switzerland .

Life

Thomas Mrsic-Flogel studied biology and neuroscience at Oxford University , UK, where he received his PhD in 2001 from the Department of Physiology . He then did research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology in Martinsried, Germany. Between 2007 and 2013 Mrsic-Flogel was Associate Professor and headed her own research group at University College London , UK. In 2013 he was appointed to the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, where he has been teaching and researching in the field of neurobiology since then.

Act

Mrsic-Flogel investigates how the brain perceives sensory stimuli and to what extent stimulus processing depends on the structure of the neural networks . Using the latest imaging and electrophysiological examination methods, his group analyzes different cell types in the visual cortex of the brain. The aim is to find out the rules according to which nerve cells in complex nerve cell networks interconnect and how they communicate with one another to encrypt visual information. Mrsic-Flogel developed a new method based on two-photon microscopy and whole-cell recordings, which enables him to decipher the connection between the function of neurons in the visual cortex and their interconnection. A map of the neural connections in the visual cortex can be created and the resulting patterns correlated with the functionality of each cell. Mrsic-Flogel's work is important for the general understanding of stimulus processing in the brain and provides explanations for neuronal dysfunction.
